Malware delivered by Yahoo, Fox, Google ads

These charts show incidences of malware distributed by a number of ad delivery platforms over a six-day period last month that were detected by Avast. Yahoo and Fox have the highest counts.
(Credit: Avast) Malware that exploits holes in popular applications is being delivered by big ad delivery platforms including those run by Yahoo, Fox, and Google, according to Prague-based antivirus firm Avast.
Viruses and other malware were found to be lurking in ads last year on high-profile sites like The New York Times and conservative news aggregator Drudge Report.com, and this year on Drudge, TechCrunch and WhitePages.com. The practice has been dubbed "malvertising."
Now, researchers at Avast are pointing fingers at some large ad delivery platforms including Yahoo's Yield Manager and Fox Audience Network's Fimserve.com, which together cover more than 50 percent of online ads, and to a much smaller degree Google's DoubleClick. In addition, some of the malicious ads ended up on Yahoo and Google sites, Avast claims.
"It's not just the small players but the ad servers connected with Google and Yahoo have been infected and served up bad ads," said Lyle Frink, public relations manager for Avast.
The most compromised ad delivery platforms were Yield Manager and Fimserve, but a number of smaller ad systems, including Myspace, were also found to be delivering malware on a lesser scale, Avast Virus Labs said.
Found in ads delivered from those networks was JavaScript code that Avast dubbed "JS:Prontexi," which Avast researcher Jiri Sejtko said is a Trojan in script form that targets the Windows operating system. It looks for vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, Java, QuickTime, and Flash and launches fake antivirus warnings, Sejtko said.
Users don't need to click on anything to get infected; a computer becomes infected after the ad is loaded by the browser, Avast said.
Since the malware started spreading in late December, Avast has registered more than 2.6 million instances of it on customer computers. Nearly 530,000 of those were from Yield Manager and more than 16,300 from DoubleClick, Sejtko said.
"The Google portion of JS:Prontexi is quite small and has gotten visibly even smaller as they have taken steps to improve the situation," Sejtko said. "That is not the case with Yahoo and Fox."
Representatives from Fox and MySpace declined to comment.
A Yahoo representative confirmed the report and said it was investigating the situation, but didn't provide much information. "We have identified the creatives in question and are working to make sure they been deactivated in our system," the company said in a statement.
"Yahoo is deeply committed to providing a high-quality experience for users, advertisers, and publishers. We expect our members to support and abide by our standards and guidelines around acceptable ad content and behavior," the statement said. "On the rare occasion that an ad is served that is in conflict with our expectations and guidelines we take action to remove it as quickly as possible."
A Google spokesman said the company had discovered malware in ads from DoubleClick on its own and halted them. "In this case, we stopped several of the ads in question on the same day, independent of this report," he said.
"When our automated system is able to identify a problem, we immediately stop serving the affected ads, and then work to refine our security measures to help capture and disable similar ads for all DoubleClick publishers and advertisers," the company said in a statement.
"DoubleClick's ad serving products maintain a security monitoring system that screens ads and is constantly adapting to respond to new developments, yet publishers are in control of what ads they serve when using DoubleClick services," the Google statement said. "We encourage publishers to maintain good quality processes, especially in terms of the networks and advertisers they deal with, and we provide tips and tricks at http://anti-malvertising.com/tips-for-publishers."
However, the Google spokesman said it was highly unlikely that malware was served on Google, adding that DoubleClick ads do not run on Google search.

New Yahoo iPhone app lets you doodle your search

                                                  Yahoo's Sketch-a-Search isn't just gloss.
                                              (Credit: Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)
If you're Yahoo, looking at a landscape where Google Search and Microsoft's Bing app pretty much have search sewn up, how do you get noticed? You try something a little eccentric.

The free Yahoo Sketch-a-Search app does what the name implies, letting your fingertip inscribe a shape on the map that will become your searching area. Maybe you want to avoid a certain area, or search for businesses in a wider pattern. Pressing the green button on the graphically rich interface engages the map, and you're free to doodle away on the native Google map. The location-aware app preloads your map based on your current location, but you can easily switch to a different city.
Searches are limited to restaurants, coffee shops, and some hotels for the moment, but Yahoo plans to expand to other local categories, like gyms, gas stations, pet stores, retail shops, and even real estate, like apartments. You can filter search results by star rating and restaurant category--we expect to see this expand when the categories grow.
Just for fun, we tried defining a search area in the shape of stars and letters of the alphabet. The app's algorithms failed to identify any searches in the area. Although that's a ding in our eyes, it's not very realistic that anyone will actually need to seek Moroccan eateries in an area shaped like the letter J. Right now, Sketch-a-Search covers only U.S. cities, but Yahoo plans to include the UK, Canada, and parts of Asia in future.
Classic Yahoo search app
Doodling a search area is a fun exercise, but it's hardly precise. In addition to Sketch-a-Search, Yahoo also released a much more traditional free search app, Yahoo Search. It includes the usual features of a search bar and access to Yahoo's full search database, but it adds a few interesting features. There's Vlingo-powered voice search, and a neat combined map and list view that shows search results on the same page as the map results (it's usually just one or the other. Another interesting feature pulls in search results from Yelp, Wikipedia, Amazon, and other similar sites.
While there are some admirable features in both apps, we'd rather see sketching combined in the greater Yahoo search app. While fun, Sketch-a-Search isn't an app we foresee using with more regularity than a traditional search.

Yahoo! Search is a web search engine, owned by Yahoo! Inc. and was as of December 2009, the 2nd largest search engine on the web by query volume, at 6.29%, after its competitor Google at 85.35% and before Bing at 3.27%, according to Net Applications.
Originally, Yahoo! Search started as a web directory of other websites, organized in a hierarchy, as opposed to a searchable index of pages. In the late 1990s, Yahoo! evolved into a full-fledged portal with a search interface and, by 2007, a limited version of selection-based search.
Yahoo! Search, originally referred to as Yahoo! provided Search interface, would send queries to a searchable index of pages supplemented with its directory of sites. The results were presented to the user under the Yahoo! brand. Originally, none of the actual web crawling and storage/retrieval of data was done by Yahoo! itself. In 2001 the searchable index was powered by Inktomi and later was powered by Google until 2004, when Yahoo! Search became independent. Yahoo! Search major competitors are: Google Search, Bing and Ask Search.
On July 29, 2009, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced a deal in which Bing would power Yahoo! Search.

Search technology acquisition

Seeking to provide its own search engine results, Yahoo! acquired their own search technology.
In 2002, they bought Inktomi, a "behind the scenes" or OEM search engine provider, whose results are shown on other companies' websites and powered Yahoo! in its earlier days. In 2003, they purchased Overture Services, Inc., which owned the AlltheWeb and AltaVista search engines. Initially, even though Yahoo! owned multiple search engines, they didn't use them on the main yahoo.com website, but kept using Google's search engine for its results.
Starting in 2003, Yahoo! Search became its own web crawler-based search engine, with a reinvented crawler called Yahoo! Slurp. Yahoo! Search combined the capabilities of all the search engine companies they had acquired, with its existing research, and put them into a single search engine. The new search engine results were included in all of Yahoo!'s sites that had a web search function. Yahoo! also started to sell the search engine results to other companies, to show on their own web sites. Their relationship with Google was terminated at that time, with the former partners becoming each other's main competitors.
In October 2007, Yahoo! Search was updated with a more modern appearance in line with the redesigned Yahoo! home page. In addition, Search Assist was added; which provides real-time query suggestions and related concepts as they are typed.
In July 2008, Yahoo! Search announced the introduction of a new service called "Build Your Own Search Service," or BOSS. This service opens the doors for developers to use Yahoo!'s system for indexing information and images and create their own custom search engine.
In July 2009, Yahoo! signed a deal with Microsoft, the result of which was that Yahoo! Search would be powered by Bing.

Search results

Yahoo! Search indexed and cached the common HTML page formats, as well as several of the more popular file-types, such as PDF, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, Word documents, RSS/XML and plain text files. For some of these supported file-types, Yahoo! Search provided cached links on their search results allowing for viewing of these file-types in standard HTML.
Using the Advanced Search interface or Preferences settings, Yahoo! Search allowed the customization of search results and enabling of certain settings such as: SafeSearch, Language Selection, Number of results, Domain restrictions, etc.
For a Basic and starter guide to Yahoo! Search, they also provided a Search Basics tutorial.[8]
In the first week of May 2008, Yahoo! launched a new search mash up called Yahoo! Glue, which is in beta testing.

Selection-based search

On June 20, 2007, Yahoo! introduced a selection-based search feature called Yahoo! Shortcuts. When activated this selection-based search feature enabled users to invoke search using only their mouse and receive search suggestions in floating windows while remaining on Yahoo! properties such as Yahoo! Mail. This feature was only active on Yahoo web pages or pages within the Yahoo! Publisher Network. Yahoo! Shortcuts required the content-owner to modify the underlying HTML of his or her webpage to call out the specific keywords to be enhanced. The technology for context-aware selection-based search on Yahoo pages was first developed by Reiner Kraft.

SearchScan
